Use of Locket:

In our narritive and trailer we ued a 'locket' as a prop which was significant within the trailer is this a print screen on her with the locket on from the trailer. We used the locket as the final girl drops her locket and the stalker picks it up and after that she gets stalked so the locket means alot in the trailer and its one of the most important props aswell as the pictures on the wall which followes our stroyboard.

Using Sony Vegas

Using this program was new for me as i didnt know what it was or how to even work sony vegas, i sat down my group and we learnt how to used it as time went on we got used to using it and we starting editing our trailer which was quite fun after all.
Here are some print screens of how i used sony vegas.

Process of Editing:

Using a new software program sony vegas which one of our group members had on her laptop we used that to make out trailer and edit things and cut things down. Here are some footage from the trailer which we edited using sony vegas.

For this scene we adjusted the lighting and brigtness and contrast for this scene as it was really bright and we wanted to make a spookier kind of effect which we did by using different tools on sony vegas.
We used night effect for various shots to make the edges dark and the overall shot.
We did this by blending and overlaying both shots to become one, so it looks as if the necklace is swinging infront of Travoir, and then adjusted the opacity.

Pictures From Filming and How Filming Went

How exactly our filming went:

Withing our filming we had to look for a place for the girl to get killed, we looked around our new college building for some dull places which we could shoot our murder scence in. We found a small area at the back of our college which looked quite iscolated and place which no one would think of going which made our atmostphere scary when we was filming and made our character look more furious and scared while we was filiming her.

Using mise en scence made her wear white as we could see the blood more clearer we put fake blood on her face and used make-up to make bruises on her face such as purple and blue eyeshadow as she did the make-up her self as she already is a make-up artist (myself). Our actor plays a psychotic and obsessive stalker, so to emphasise on this we decided to have a scene with various pictures of Adeeti stuck on a white wall, and another showing him burning one of her pictures. At the train station, he picks up Adeeti's locket from the ground and keeps it.

Using The Final Girl Theory

In our trailer we looked in detail at the final girl theory, we looked at other types of real media texts which would help us come up with this story line and they ways in which we could use our final girl also looking at other movies/ trailers to help us such as : Halloween, Physco, Carrie, Saw, Drag me to Hell, Dracula and Nosferatu. Final consists of having a boyish name, orginally the final girl would share a history with her killer as in our trailer she does share a history with her killer so we followed the conventions of the Final girl theory

In our trailer :

We gave our final girl (me) a boyish name which was Jayden which we followed the conventions of the final girl theory, we gave her a history with her stalker such as knowing each other from a long time back and her costumes within all blood scences and within the trailer we made her wear either white showing her innocence and blood which was shown in the trailer we also made her wear casual cloths as if she was a normal ' boyish' type character.

Audience Feedback

From audience feedback I have concluded overall had positive feedback, I had mostly asked females about our trailer rather than males. Most people said the poster was more successful than the magazine itself.

Locations

This was our first location we chose streatham station we chose this place as its small and its quite creepy, also we decided to choose this loacation as the 'stalker' and the girl meet.
We chose streatham ice rink as anthor location we chose this becuase its really dull and creepy inside and it looks like no one actually enters the place it was cold in there too which made us feel weird when we where in the shooting this scence and it also gave us more support with making our trailer.
For the mirror scence we used my bedroom, with lipstick i wrote on the mirror 'Im watching you' it was quite difficult to write on the mirror and shoot this scence as the table was quite small to put the camera which was our problem but we out little boxes onto the table and placed out camera inside the doors so when i open the door it gives it a spooky effect.

Shooting Schedule

Before we started filming we had to make a shooting schedule so we know where were filming and what time and what place, we stuck to this schedule and this helped us but due to heavy snow we didnt really stick to much of our schedule.

Storyboard Final

Research For Narrative

We reasearched onto the BBC website and we found a story which matched ours and in order to make our trailer realistic and beliveable we thought we research into a real life story.

Our Narrative and Draft.

Our Production Name and Logo

This is our production name and logo which we came up with we first thought of some others like 'Eye Productions' but it didnt really work well so we then thought of 'JIGSAW' productions. We thought this was a strong production name and we then used photoshop to create this we got fonts of 'dafont.com' and we thought we would put a puzzle peice outside the 'i' so that it gives it an effect that it is a jigsaw this also matched our film trailer and its very jigsaw ( put in peices).

Some Conventions Of Horror Trialers:

  •  They highlight the 'best bits' of the film
  •  We are not shown the story in narrative order
  •  They showcase the stars of the film
  •  Conversations between characters usually consist of one line each
  •  Voice - Overs are used to tell the story and give credit information
  •  Music plays an important role in creating atmosphere
  •  The title does not appear until the end
  •  The trailer builds to a climax, where it ends

Paul Wells Research

→ Main horror audience
  •  Teenagers
  • Young adults
→ Effects of horror on audiences

→ Small focus groups study - 12 members
4 age groups:  →16-25   » 1975-1984
                    → 26-40  » 1960-1974
                    → 41-55  » 1945-1959
                    → 56-80  » 1920-1944

This study teaches us about the relationship to being frightened with changes with age and how it relates to a broader factor affecting emotional repsones. We also learn audiences between 1970's and 1990's are more anesthetist to explicit special effects, whereas 'monster' films of the 20s and 30s reported very strong personal responses to images and iconography of horror when cinema was new and unknown. Young audiences are aware of artificially and are becoming harder to shock, which films play into this knowingness of horror conventions and leaves us a question to answer is this part of the fun?

In order to see which age group enjoys horror the most and which is easily frightened, I decided to conduct my own horror questionnaire.

Moral Panics

A moral panic essentially a 'crusade' against behavior or precieved negative developments in society. Cohen (1972): Argues that a moral panic is when the media exaggerates through the media such as newspapers to an event to refer to its social uses, morality today is not as strong as it once was.It has caused changes in the law including the 1894 video recordings act that gave the BBFC power to classify videos.

Newspapers which run moral panics:

→DAILY MAIL

The Final Girl Theory

→ The final girl theory is based on the last female character in a horror film

→ The theory was based / created by Carol J Clover

→ The girl is either typically sexually unavailable / not attractive

→ She can either have a girls or boys name

→ She seems to know about 'the killer' in the film

→ She might end up becoming the killer using weapons and knifes

→ She says that the killer is mostly a male character
     Example: Norman Bates in Physco

→ For horror films to be successful they they say that the surviving character
should be a female, as she must experience horror

Addition Information about 'Male Gaze'

→ Anne Doane (1892) added that women have a 'marginal gaze' within film,
    just like the patriarchal society.

→ Suzanne Moor (1988) added that male bodies are only displayed in certain
conditions- They are always in active poses as if they can walk away from gaze.

→ Van Zoonen (1994) men look at women, women watch themselves being looked
     at.

Male Gaze

The gaze is constructed through the camera man and production team establishing and framing a short the 'look' withing the film of male characters objectivfiying female ones: the specators gaze is there by constructed through mechanisms.

→ Men fetishe women imbuing them with an overvalued and unrealistic
     status: 'Fetishistic   Scopophilia'

→ Men have this gaze to avoid being 'castrated'

→ Women are represtented as sexual spectale and objective of pleasure
     for characters and audience

Representation of Women

→ Fragile needs man strength
  • Costume
  • White
  • Dresses - Low cut
 → Blonde / Brunette - Survive?
  • Victim
  • Too Stupid
  • More Practical
→ Sacrifice for greater good

→ Position in relation to men

Todorovs Narrative Theory:

Todorov ignores character, tone and mood in this analysis which differenates one talk from anthor. Levi - Struass was a main critic as he has come from the structuralist approach of seeking meaning in his tales : which propp doesnt do.

His basic part of the narrative is:
  • Climax
  • Anti Climax
  • Setting Characters
  • Ending/Answer
He also developed and extended theory which are
  • Exposition => Introduction to characters
  • Development => Situation
  • Complication => Main Event / Action
  • Climax => Confrontation
  • Resolution => Resolution
By watching the 'The Faculty' we was able to understand Todorovs theory in more depth and understand his theory.

Exposition :
Opening scence when each character introduced on school grounds, this is where main characters are introdcued and auidences where able to have an insight as to what each character is like.

Development:
Slowly each of the teachers/students where effected by the organism the 'Alien Parasites'

Complication:
After realsing that they can use the drug to kill the alien, they run out of drugs and zeke and cacy are forced to leave the gym so that they are safe and hacing to face the alien.

Climax:
When they realise 'Marybeth' is the queen alien and trys to kill everyone and changes into a large aquatic creature, trying to infect the remaining survivor.

Resolution:
Casey kills the alien by stabbing her in the eye with the drug and also trapping her agaisnt the wall, everything is returned back to normal although certain characters become friends.

Research Into Real Media Texts:

To understand the genre of horror and how it developed over the years, i carried out research by watching a range of horror movies/extracts such as:

  • Nosferatu (1922)
  • The Faculty (1998
  • Shaun Of The Dead (2004)
  •  Bramstoker's Dracula (1992)
  • Psycho (1960)
  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
  • Halloween (1978)
  • Carrie (1976)
  • Scream (1996)

By studing these films in depth i have an understanding of how horror has changed over the years and that there are many sub genres of horror.

Sub Genres:
  • Vampires
  • Slashers
  • Parody
  • Teen
  • Hammer
  • Hybrid
